Volcanic Lava Rock is very porous and weighs less than half that of other landscape materials making it easy to transport and spread. Lava Rock insulates the soil from heat and cold. Studies show that lava rock is more effective in retaining moisture in topsoil, than wood mulch products. It helps better regulate moisture in the ground and will not rot, decay or be subject to color fade like wood mulches, making it a permanent mulch replacement. From our Lava Rock Collection, it measures on average 3" - 6" and is used as an accessory to our Fire Glass or fire pit. We recommend using Lava rock as a filler if you have a deep fireplace or firepit. For a complete design, add Fire Glass on top to cover the fire rock thoroughly so it will not be detectable. We currently offer lava rock in 10 lb. bags, which is equal size to 20 lbs. of Fire Glass. Because lava rock is economical, it is the perfect choice .... Lava rock is available in three colors; reddish-brown, black, and gray. The minerals present in the rock and the cooling process determine its color. The reddish-brown tint appears only if the iron in the lava begins to oxidize when it is cooling down.

Volcanic rocks are primarily categorized into two main categories, the felsic rock, and the mafic rocks. The difference is dictated by their composition. Felsic rocks are rich in silicon and aluminum minerals, whereas mafic rocks comprise of iron and magnesium.

For those with a semi sloped garden, using lava rock as mulch can do wonders. It is one of the most effective ways of preventing soil erosion while maintaining optimal soil health and promoting natural growth, except for weeds.

Three steps are all it takes to add volcanic rocks as mulch for your garden. You can get creative and use different colors for different areas. You can even use a mix of red, grey, and black to undermine the brightness of the red that many find awkward. It also adds a natural, earthy look to the yard.

You can, however, avoid the harmful side effects by opting for stone, lava rock, or gravel. They offer the perfect low maintenance and environment-friendly mulch option. They also add beautiful textures to the yard, which makes them even more appealing.

Your herb garden makes for another amazing area for lava rocks. Herb growing and picking can become tiresome with loose soil. You have to maintain it regularly to ensure the soil does not clog together, preventing nutrients from seeping in.

However, it is not suitable for use in kitchen gardens that grow a variety of vegetables and fruits. Such gardens require regular soil aeration and fertilization. They are also replanted quite frequently, and using lava rocks as garden mulch in these areas is not ideal.

A spectacular soil amendment to increase drainage and soil structure, our black lava rock sheds moisture easily and is perfect for cacti and succulents, and even some tropicals. It also makes a striking top dressing that makes lush green leaves and variegation pop.

I have a Dracaena marginata which is very finicky -- it only wants black lava rock as its soil amendment. (This Dracaena and I have been together for over 20 years, so it has made its wants known over time!) BuildaSoil is absolutely the best place to buy this. High quality product, and I honestly can't believe they offer free shipping! I will never shop anywhere else.

A layer of mulch, whether organic or inorganic, gives your landscape an attractive, finished look. Lava rock is one of many commercially available inorganic mulching materials. Inorganic mulches won't add nutrients to your garden or improve soil characteristics, but have the advantage of lasting longer than organic materials. The relative permanence of inorganic mulches makes it important to weigh if a material such as lava rock is a good choice for your mulching needs.

Red lava rock, technically called scoria is a colorful addition to a garden; some suppliers also sell black lava rock, which garners its visual impact from texture, alone. The red coloration is formed during eruption due to the oxidation of iron. A favorite for desert landscapes, lava rock will work best where it mirrors the surrounding terrain or is designed to be a standout feature, such as an island bed. Relative to other rock mulches, lava is lightweight, so less costly to transport and less onerous to move into the garden for spreading.

Mulching serves a critical function in temperature and moisture moderation. Lava rock absorbs heat during the day and releases it during the night. Rock mulches generally slow evaporation from the soil, although if days are warm, dark mulch means higher temperatures, with faster evaporation. If installed with a fabric weed barrier underneath, lava rock creates an effective weed suppressant.

Aesthetics are an important component of mulching. If you are concerned about curb appeal for enhancing real estate values, consider that red lava rock may be unappealing to some - and if you don't like how lava rock looks after you've installed it as mulch, it is difficult and costly to remove. The rocks can also be used by neighborhood vandals to scratch graffiti onto surfaces.

Rock mulches don't break down as quickly as organic mulches, but lava rock can wash or blow away if you use it in exposed locations. New Mexico State University Extension specialists recommend installing lava rock at least an inch below sidewalk level to reduce its movement out of planting beds. Despite being lightweight, lava rocks can damage mower blades if pieces end up on your lawn. Even if they remain where you place them, lava rocks' sharp edges make the material difficult to work around, so it is best used in permanent plantings or other locations where maintenance tasks are minimal.

I too am interested in where you could find black lava rock. There are a few places that sell it but it comes with lots of red pieces mixed in. And like Terence said, mostly large particle sizes for gas fire pits and the like.

Made from natural volcanic rock, this crushed aggregate/soil medium is very porous to improve drainage and aeration of the roots. The color is black with a few grayish-black rocks speckled throughout. It's great to use for top soil dressing, bottom layer for drainage and mixed with akadama and our all purpose organic bonsai soil mix. It can also be used for cactus and succulent plants too. We've repackaged the soil to fit inside a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Medium Box for better priced shipping.

Volcanic rock (often shortened to volcanics in scientific contexts) is a rock formed from lava erupted from a volcano. Like all rock types, the concept of volcanic rock is artificial, and in nature volcanic rocks grade into hypabyssal and metamorphic rocks and constitute an important element of some sediments and sedimentary rocks. For these reasons, in geology, volcanics and shallow hypabyssal rocks are not always treated as distinct. In the context of Precambrian shield geology, the term "volcanic" is often applied to what are strictly metavolcanic rocks. Volcanic rocks and sediment that form from magma erupted into the air are called "pyroclastics," and these are also technically sedimentary rocks.

Volcanic rocks often have a vesicular texture caused by voids left by volatiles trapped in the molten lava. Pumice is a highly vesicular rock produced in explosive volcanic eruptions.[citation needed]

where both silica and total alkali oxide content (A) are expressed as molar fraction. Because the TAS diagram uses weight fraction and the boundary between alkaline and subalkaline rock is defined in terms of molar fraction, the position of this curve on the TAS diagram is only approximate. Peralkaline volcanic rocks are defined as rocks having Na2O + K2O > Al2O3, so that some of the alkali oxides must be present as aegirine or sodic amphibole rather than feldspar.[8][7]

The terms lava stone and lava rock are more used by marketers than geologists, who would likely say "volcanic rock" (because lava is a molten liquid and rock is solid). "Lava stone" may describe anything from a friable silicic pumice to solid mafic flow basalt, and is sometimes used to describe rocks that were never lava, but look as if they were (such as sedimentary limestone with dissolution pitting). To convey anything about the physical or chemical properties of the rock, a more specific term should be used; a good supplier will know what sort of volcanic rock they are selling.[9]

The sub-family of rocks that form from volcanic lava are called igneous volcanic rocks (to differentiate them from igneous rocks that form from magma below the surface, called igneous plutonic rocks). 041b061a72
